Ejler Hjorth-Westh

Chair Making

This two week workshop is for the experienced woodworker who wants to learn the art of chair making.

Through lectures and demonstrations, Ejler presents the tools, skills and finer points needed to create an original chair, while you engage in the hands-on process of designing and building a full scale model.

Designing is about sketching, mock-up and striking a beautiful curve; but it is also about inspiration, history and mythology. The sculptural and intuitive nature of a chair is inseparable from its engineered practicality.

Building is about techniques: joinery, compound angles, lamination, shaping, jigs and templates. It is about tools: hand plane, spoke shave, scraper, sharpening and tuning. And it’s about upholstery and the ideal finish.

It is often said that chair making is the greatest challenge to a woodworker's skills. This workshop offers you the opportunity to meet that challenge.
